How did you hear about Slow Money NC?: from Leading Green in Black Mountain, NC

Tell us your story. Who are you? What is your business idea? Tell us your plan: In 2007, Daniel Dover started Darby Farms to cure his body and mind of constant fatigue and depression after a life time of eating dead food and 2 1/2 years of being a vegetarian/vegan. So utilizing 3 acres of pasture owned by his wife’s family in Monroe, GA, Daniel resolved to feed himself, family, friends and neighbors with nutrient dense foods . First starting with a market garden, moving next to laying hens and then to meat chickens on those 3 acres, Daniel learned the thrill and excitement of growing your own food and its tribulations.

After realizing the need for more land, in 2010 the farm expanded and now leased a house with 50+ acres of pasture and mixed hard wood and pine, in Good Hope, GA. We were finally able after years of blood sweat and tears with the help of the USDA FSA loan program to purchase 76 acres beautifully laid in the foothills of Union Mills, NC in 2017.
For 2018 Darby Farms plans to raise 2000 laying hens, 7,000 meat type chicken and turkey, 20 pigs, 20 head of sheep and a few head of cattle.
We would use the funds to apply for organic certification, for our pastures, perimeter fencing, water line install for whole farm, possible 2nd well, cow/sheep purchase (sold all of ours to purchase farm in 2017) and an on farm poultry processing facility (already have the building and cold storage just need professional equipment, wall partitions, insulation and wiring) since the closure of the USDA inspected Foothills Pilot Plant that we took our poultry to be processed. We are already permitted to process on farm by NCDOA.

Please briefly describe your commitment to sustainable food systems in North Carolina.: We have been striving for the past decade to be a sustainable force in our community in GA. When we leased farm land in the past we utilized such practices as rotational grazing and foraging for all our poultry, hogs, sheep and cattle with high tensile and electrified netting, invasive species removal (ie Chinese privet, multiflora rose, thistle) without the use of herbicides, use no chemical or trucked in fertilizers, use no chemical wormers for our cattle, sheep, swine or poultry (we use raw apple cider vinegar for poultry, copper sulfate with clay suspension for cattle and sheep. Now that we own the land we steward we plan on implementing silvoculture.
